Every winter outfit starts with a base layer, and more often than not, that’s with a winter top. But, with so many tops on the market, from long-sleeved with a boat neck to cute and cropped, elegant and reserved or plunge-neck and covered in sequins, it can be difficult to know where to begin when building your staple winter wardrobe.

So, whether you’re hunting for some new jeans-and-a-nice-top combo options, or need a winter party top to stay warm and make a statement this Christmas party season, we’ve got you covered. If you’re wondering how to dress in winter, the expert team at SilkFred has pulled together the ultimate guide on what tops to wear in winter, so you don’t have to worry.

Long-sleeved Tops

Starting with a classic, a long-sleeved top is the perfect winter top essential. Perfect for day or night, and ideal for layering, simply pop on a long-sleeve top to wear on its own, under your favourite winter jumper, or as a base layer for a cute pinafore dress or jumpsuit.

If you’re working on a capsule wardrobe, we’d recommend stocking up for the winter with a couple of neutral coloured long-sleeve tops in black, white and grey. These colours are easy to mix and match with pretty much anything, and even look great paired with some blue denim jeans. Style with a cosy coat and your favourite winter stompers (we love these brown suede cowboy boots) and you’re ready to go.

Roll Neck Tops

Something every girl should have in their winter closet is a knitted roll neck top. They’re warm, cosy and incredibly chic. Plus, they’re a great option to throw on for work in the morning, and take the look from day to night with a few simple accessory changes.

We love a black roll neck styled with a satin midi skirt, tights and knee-high boots. Layer over a beige trench coat and you have a classy look for the office. To elevate the look, switch your longline coat for a black jacket, and swap your skirt for some faux leather trousers for an edgy (and still warm!) winter night out look.

Velvet Tops

Here’s one for the low maintenance ladies. Nothing says winter better than velvet – it’s soft, sleek and oh-so sumptuous. Better yet, a velvet top in a deep burgundy or forest green shade makes for a stunning evening look in the chilly season, and it’s so easy to style.

Add some winter flair to your outfit with some black flared jeans, some pointy heeled boots, and – if you fancy feeling extra – throw over a faux fur coat. Cosy but cute, nailed.

Sequin Tops

A little sparkle never hurt in the winter time. If you fancy adding some shimmer to your winter wardrobe this year, why not opt for a sequin top? Ideal for work Christmas drinks, family gatherings or going out for cocktails with friends, a sparkly top is a sure fire way to spice up any winter look.

We love an asymmetrical sequin top for an elegant feel. Simply pair with some black trousers, your favourite dancing shoes, a clutch, and you’re all set.
