Outfits For Autumn Events

When you imagine autumn, what do you think of? Is it the trees turning a rich orange and crisp leaves crunching under your feet as you walk? Perhaps it’s the smell of cinnamon or the first sip of that pumpkin-spiced latte. Or maybe it’s a back-to-back marathon of scary movies with your besties?

Whatever you picture, there’s one thing we can all agree on when it comes to the transitional season, and that’s the need for a fresh wardrobe! It’s time to bid those summer fits farewell for another year, and say hello to cosy knitwear and versatile layering.

So, whether you need some serious autumnal outfit inspo or just a few staple pieces, take a peek at our favourite cosy looks below…

Our top tips for dressing in autumn

  •  Keep the chills away: Don’t be put off by autumn’s unpredictable weather; the secret is using  versatile layers to your advantage – think light jumpers, cute cardigans, throw-on blazers, gilets, turtlenecks and longline coats.
  • Copy the autumn colours: The new season offers the perfect opportunity to tap into those deliciously rich, warm tones like browns, oranges, deep reds and forest greens. Do as Lorelai Gilmore would and lean into that autumnal colour palette. All you need now is a cup of fresh coffee from Luke’s.

  • It’s all in the details: One of the best things about autumn is that it offers the opportunity for us to get creative with our accessories. From thick mittens to fingerless gloves, chunky throw-over-the-shoulder scarves to skinny ones, berets to bobble hats – whatever your preference, there are endless styling options to level up your fits and stay warm, too.

  • Stomp with style: As far as shoes go, it’s the perfect time to start dusting off your knee-highs and ankle boots. Need to step up your autumn footwear? Don’t worry, we’ve spotlighted a few of our all-time fall faves below.

Perfect For: Bonfire Night

What are your Bonfire Night plans this year? If, like me, you’re hoping to watch a fireworks display, then your best bet is to wrap up warm. Start with comfy denim (any wash or fit will do, but I’m a big fan of these blue skinnies), then throw on a snuggly knit – like this long-sleeved striped jumper. Complete the look with a teddy coat, ankle boots and a hot chocolate. If you’re really feeling the chill, you could even pop on a thin vest or thermal top underneath.

Bonfire Night is one of our favourite autumnal festivities. Whether you’re cosying up by the bonfire, taking in a firework extravaganza, or enjoying a toffee apple, you’ll need something that’s cosy yet cute – which means wrapping up warm.

Start with comfy denim (any wash or fit will do, but we’re big fans of these blue skinnies), then throw on a snuggly knit – like this staple long-sleeved striped jumper. Complete the look with a teddy coat, ankle boots and a hot chocolate, of course. If you’re really feeling the chill, you could even pop on a thin vest or thermal top underneath. Snug as a bug!

Perfect For: Sunday Roasts

Yep, autumn is unofficially Sunday roast season, and we’re already salivating at the thought of afternoons spent scoffing crispy potatoes, Yorkshire puds and, of course, lashings of gravy. For this look, comfort is as important as style, and you’ll want something bloat-friendly, too. This longline jumper is great at hiding food babies, and that camel colour looks lovely layered over dark wash jeans – it makes for a gorgeous contrast. Accessories-wise, we’d recommend some chunky boots and a matching bag. Now it’s time to feast!

Perfect For: Pumpkin Picking

The most wholesome (but also physically challenging) autumn activity, pumpkin picking, calls for an outfit that doesn’t skimp on comfort. To nail the look, go for some comfy high-waisted jeans, a chic bodysuit and a layer-friendly shacket, alongside a classic pair of chunky black boots. A bodysuit (unlike a tee or top) is guaranteed to stay in place all day, so you don’t have to keep faffing around with it, and your boots are mud-friendly – because nobody wants to be ruining any box-fresh creps. Happy Pumpkin picking!

Perfect For: Pub Trips

Here at SilkFred, nothing quite gets us in the mood for colder weather like a cosy pub trip – especially if a roaring fire is involved. If you’re in the same boat, you’ll need an outfit that’s the ideal mix of dressy and casual. Layering a biker jacket over a maxi dress is a fuss-free way to nail easy autumn glam, and we adore the playful print on this shirt-style option. Pop on some fleecy tights if it’s extra nippy. A slouchy bag and black boots are the ideal accompaniment to this outfit – as is your red wine of choice, naturally.

Dresses not your thing? Why not go for a sassy jumpsuit instead? Here are some of our fave autumnal one pieces.

Perfect For: Brunches

Nope, brunches aren’t just for summer. Swap your chilled mimosas for a maple spice latte, and sub out your mini dresses for this cute roll neck-and-skirt combo. Tights are optional, but we’d recommend opting for knee-high boots (to keep the calves toasty) and an edgy biker jacket to complete this look. The glittery embellishments on the skirt mean you can also wear it for evening or swankier events. Win-Win!

Perfect For: Weekend Walks

Strolling through freshly fallen leaves (while nabbing a few conkers en route) is one of the best things about autumn. As with some of the other looks, jeans and a wear-anywhere turtleneck top forms the basis of this outfit.

For extra warmth and coverage, why not throw on a knitted hat and your cosiest puffer coat. This oyster-coloured jacket comes with a hood and two big pockets, so it’s as versatile as it is stylish. Now all that’s left to do is pop on a wistful playlist and pretend you’re in a movie as you stroll down the street…

Perfect For: Christmas Shopping

Soft and comfy separates are your fashion saviours when it comes to pre-Christmas shopping sprees. Simply tuck a ribbed jumper into a pair of faux leather jeans (this high-waisted number is ideal for a more streamlined look), then add lace-up boots and a winter coat for ultimate cosiness. We love this boxy longline coat by Pretty Lavish – it comes in a stunning charcoal shade that can be styled with almost any outfit. Now it’s time to shop ‘till you drop…
