With the colder seasons fast approaching, tis’ the season where all we want to do is throw on our favourite knit, thickest socks and biggest puffer and do away with fashion all together. However, there is a way to combat the cold without looking shapeless and frumpy and that’s layering.
Finding pieces that are easy to take on & off whilst keeping you warm and stylish is no easy feat (we all know how changeable UK weather is) . But luckily, our favourite celebs are serving some serious seasonal style inspiration. From belly-bearing Bella Hadid to kitted-out Kate Middleton, our resident Head Stylist Megan Watkins has given us a masterclass on how to layer and how you can pull off these star-studded looks yourself.
Megan says: “When building a versatile winter outfit, you want to consider colour trends, fabric and structure. Layering is all about trial and error and dressing in a way that doesn’t compromise your signature style.”
1. Show Some Skin Like Bella Hadid
Bella might be the world’s hottest supermodel, but it’s her off-duty street style that makes her a fashion icon. When it comes to seasonal trends, there’s always something we can learn from Bella.
Megan recommends: “Whether it’s baring a bit of midriff or wearing a long boot to show off some leg – Bella Hadid nails y2k layering. If you’re feeling really fashion-forward, layer your belts like Bella did at the Balenciaga S/S 2023 show, or if you want to keep it more understated, throw on a classic shirt and button it however your heart desires.
2. Go Monochrome Like Kate Middleton
No one nails monochrome dressing quite like Princess of Wales, and Kate’s coat collection is a thing of eternal envy, so it’s no surprise that time and time again, we look to this royal fashion icon for winter dressing inspiration.
Megane explains: “This camel coat caused a stir this month when Kate wore this look as she and William got back to their royal duties and for good reason. Kate styled her cool-toned coat with a matching midi dress, tan handbag and belt. Using matching and similar hues gives any layered look that effortless feel that’s royally stylish.”
3. Go For A Bold Colour Like Kendall Jenner
At this point, Kendall’s minimalist wardrobe is something we all know and love. Although the temperate Los Angeles weather might not always afford her the opportunity to create some serious layering looks, Kendall is no stranger to chic cardigans, statement knits and colourful vests.
Megan suggests: “Layering a bold knit is not for the faint hearted. It can be tricky to pull this look off, as you don’t want to detract from the main event or create a colour clash. Identify the overarching tones of the piece and match your accessories, like a handbag, shoes or sunnies, accordingly.”
4. Take it Oversized Like Hailey Bieber
Although she often hits the red carpet wearing strictly bodycon, Hailey’s off-duty style is often a little more cosy and casual. Both she and husband Justin Bieber are often seen in baggy hoodies, loose-fitting jeans and drop-shoulder tees, nailing the oversized trend.
Megan suggests: “The oversized trend is not going anywhere soon and if you need some inspiration on how to pull it off, Hailey Bieber is your girl. Pair a classic jumper and jeans combo with a structured oversized blazer or coat for that ultimate chic-but-cosy winter look.”
5. Nail British Classics Like Alexa Chung
For years, Alexa Chung has superbly exemplified a rock-and-roll look that’s also red-carpet ready. Looking put-together at Glastonbury is no easy feat, but by layering and using classic British staples, our favourite Brit-fashion icon manages to stay fashionable whilst ankle-deep in mud.
Megan says: “You can’t go wrong layering with some true British classics. Whether you’re going for festival chic or a hot-girl-walk vibe, sleek wellies, a structured wax coat and a cable knit sweater will have you channelling that Brit-fashion royalty (like Alexa Chung).”
