I won’t win any prizes for originality by saying this, but December is my favourite month to dress up in. Maybe it’s because party season feels like a license to try something new? A velvet jumpsuit here, a metallic blazer there. Or perhaps it’s because that end-of-term excitement somehow filters through to all my outfit choices, whether it’s an oversized teddy coat or a micro LBD.
Either way, December is a month to have fun with your wardrobe. It’s a time for textures that catch the limelight – satin, lace and sequin details – and jewel colours that are straight out of the Quality Street tin. At the same time, it’s the tail-end of the year and a chance to hide away from the cold, so I’m also thinking about soft-feel loungewear and chunky knitted layers.
Here are my outfit picks for December, perfect for gifting under the tree, or better yet, to yourself.
The Main Event Dress
With its gorgeous fresh print and deep leg split, this stunning emerald midi reminds me of J.Lo’s iconic green dress moment. It gives you a glamorous evening look without bringing your arms out of hibernation, which I always appreciate, and the waist panel really helps to create a defined hourglass shape. Pair with some simple heels that let the dress do the talking – some square-toe strappy sandals would be perfect.
The Cosy Bambino Cardi
Festive pub trip booked with your friends? Pair the baby soft bambino cardi in mocha with some vinyl-look leather trousers or leggings for a combo that looks just the right amount of dressed up, without trying too hard. I’d add some simple gold hoop earrings and ankle boots to complete the look.
The Textured Blazer
This loose-fitting silver blazer is the perfect way to dress up some simple black separates or an LBD. I love the contrasting panel and lightweight fit on this one. For extra drama, wear with a pair of wide-leg culottes or flared leggings, and add a bag with some party details, like studs or feather trim.
The Outfit-Making Coat
Need a fancy-but-warm coat that you can throw over just about any dress without spoiling your outfit? This black longline teddy coat always does the job for me. With its deep pockets, wide lapels and thick furry texture, it’s a practical choice for a long cold winter, but will also go with all the partywear in your wardrobe. I find a longer coat always look great contrasted with a mini dress hemline, as it balances out the proportions of your outfit.
The Knitted Co-Ords
There’s something about camel that always looks expensive. This chunky knitted loungewear set has a plush feel about it, even if all I do while wearing it is eat cheese and watch Gavin & Stacey re-runs. Plus, you can easily mix and match the oversized cardi and joggers with other pieces in your wardrobe to give you loads of wears out of one purchase.
