Whilst the autumn time can sometimes feel fleeting, if you’re not equipped with the right gear, it can be a struggle to find something to wear for this unpredictable in-between season. Sometimes we’re treated to an Indian summer, sometimes autumn skips straight to freezing, wet temperatures. Frustrating, right?

Worry not, that’s why the expert team here at SilkFred has pulled together the ultimate guide on what to wear in autumn, with these cute outfit ideas.

Looking for some fitspiration for that tricky in-between season? Well, you’re in the right place…

Our top tips for dressing in autumn

  • Build a Core Capsule: Our secret to mastering the autumn season is out. Build a capsule wardrobe! And it’s not as daunting as you may think, simply start by picking out 5-6 key items that you can mix-and-match all season long. Remember, you can pull these out twice a year for the tricky springtime, too.

  • Layers, Layers, Layers: Speaking of which, make sure your autumn wardrobe has items that you can layer up or down. This way, you won’t be caught short if you’re suddenly too hot or too cold. Light layers are items like thin cardigans, sweatervests, gilets and lightweight jackets. Have a couple of these up your sleeves and you’ll be mastering autumn like a pro.

  • Choose Your Colours Wisely: When it comes to picking out colours, it’s best to stick to neutral hues that go with everything, like black, white and nude. However, don’t be afraid to lean into that gorgeous autumn colour palette. Think rich orange tones, wine red, rust, burgundy, browns and dark greens. These shades go hand in hand with the fall.

Key pieces for your capsule autumn wardrobe

A Classic Trench Coat

Say hello to the ultimate autumnal outerwear, the timeless trench coat. Longline yet lightweight, a trench is perfect for throwing on for the office, a family trip to the park, or even as the finishing touch for a chilly evening out to the theatre or for a fancy dinner. That’s why we believe a trench coat should be in every capsule wardrobe.

If you’re looking to invest in one trusty trench, we recommend opting for a beige trench coat, that can be paired with almost anything. To keep things classic, we’d style a trench with some blue straight jeans, a t-shirt and this Cable Knit Stripe Jumper. Slip on some white trainers for daytime wear, or switch to some ankle boots and you instantly have your nightime look. Easy breezy!

A Good Pair of Jeans

Arguably the basis to every foolproof autumn outfit: a good pair of well-fitted jeans. Easy to throw on and oh-so versatile, jeans are the best way to keep warm in autumn whilst still looking cute. Better yet, there are endless colours, styles and cuts to choose from, so you can find the best fit for you. Whether you prefer a effortlessly cool and baggy boyfriend jean, or a retro ‘70s flare, there’s a denim style to suit everyone.

Styling-wise, we don’t need to tell you that jeans-and-a-nice-top looks good. In autumn, we love a pair of blue jeans with tops in those gorgeous fall tones like rich orange, greens and browns. Layer up accordingly with a thin cardigan or jumper, and you’re good to go!

A Cosy Cardigan

Searching for the perfect layer? Look no further than the cosy cardigan. Whether you prefer something long, oversized, cropped or chunky, there are so many cardy’s on the market to choose from – all of them like a warm hug.

We love a longline cardigan in the autumn, like this stunning mustard number, that you can throw over any outfit and instantly snuggle down. Style with jeans, trousers, or even a skirt, long oversized cardigans are the perfect light layer to pop on for extra texture and warmth. You’ll be snug as a bug all season long.

A Crisp White Shirt

Another staple piece for your closet this autumn is a crisp white shirt. Great on its own and ideal as a base for layering, a timeless white shirt is a real game changer. Choose from oversized or a classic fit, peterpan collar or large and pointy, there are tonnes of ways you can add some personality to this neutral number.

Heading to the office or a formal event? It’s time to layer up. Choose a well-fitted white shirt that you can tuck into trousers or a skirt, and add a cable knit jumper over the top. We love a classy navy or forest green jumper for this look. Pair with some sophisticated loafers or ballet pumps and you’re looking oh-so chic. For a more casual look, go for an oversized white shirt and pair with blue denim jeans. Pop on a vest underneath your shirt if it’s due to be a little nippy. And voila! Elegance made easy.

A Modest Maxi Skirt

Who says autumn is reserved for jeans and trousers only? Spice up your wardrobe with a stunning maxi skirt. Just as easy to throw on, but looks like you’ve put deep thought into your fit, now that’s our kind of smart dressing. We’d recommend going for a pleated number in a dark brown or black, or a funky checkered print, if you’re feeling bold.

Maxi skirts look effortlessly cool paired with a slouchy, oversized jumper and some chunky trainers to add some edge. Remember, you can always add some tights or thick socks if you’re worried about it getting chilly.

Versatile Ankle Boots

Thought we’d forgotten about footwear? It wouldn’t be autumn without a pair of trusty boots to see you through the season. Whether you’re planning a series of country walks, or simply need something to keep your toes nice and toasty, there’s nothing a pair of boots can’t handle.

We’d recommend opting for a pair of chunky black ankle boots for everyday wear. Or, if you’re wanting something with a bit more flair, why not go for some heeled ankle boots to see you through evening outings. These boots were made for strutting.
