Top tips for figuring out the dress code for a party:
-
Check your invite: For formal parties, weddings or events, the dress code is usually stated on your invitation.
-
Ask your host: If in doubt, it’s always best to ask! If you’re unsure exactly what the dress code is or if it’s a little too vague, why not ask your host what kind of attire they’re expecting to see their guests in. It’ll save a lot of guess-work and help you find the perfect dress a lot sooner!
-
Phone a friend: What a dress code means for one person may be translated totally differently for someone else. Make sure you’re on the same page as your fellow guests and ask what your friends are thinking of wearing. It’ll also eliminate any awkward turning-up-in-the-same-frock scenarios (the horror!).
What To Wear For A Black Tie Dress Code
Wondering what black tie actually means? Don’t worry, we’ve got you. Traditionally, black tie dress code means a formal floor-length dress, in a typical ‘evening dress’ material. This means fabrics like silk, satin, chiffon, velvet, lace or tulle. Basically, pretty fancy.
You may be able to get away with a shorter midi-length, but if in doubt, go for a maxi number. And with some many flattering cuts, colours and styles on the market, you’ll be spoilt for choice. We love a maxi dress with a mermaid shape for a slinky look, or an ethereal chiffon number to be the belle of the ball. Don’t forget to accessorise with some dainty jewellery and pop on some comfy high heels to dance all night long.

What To Wear For A White Tie Dress Code
Got an invite through the door that says ‘white tie’? You lucky thing. White tie is the creme-de-la-creme of the dress codes. One step higher than black tie, white tie typically means men must wear a white dickie bow and a tailcoat, and women must strictly stick to floor-length gowns – no short cuts here, ladies! Basically, white tie dress code means seriously fancy.
For a white tie party, we love a ball gown with an empire waistline and an elegant sweetheart neckline. Style with some sophisticated court shoes and a matching clutch bag in the same colour. And why not go for some satin white gloves to really channel your Kiera Knightly in Pride & Prejudice?! Don’t forget to pack your dance card for the suitors…
What To Wear For A Smart Casual Dress Code
Keeping things a little more casual? A Smart casual dress code can be a difficult one to crack. The key to nailing your smart casual look is about balance. Allow one dressy piece to ground your entire outfit. For example, go for a stunning maxi skirt to be the centre of attention and style with a simple cami top and flat pointy shoes to keep the focus on your skirt. Or, why not style a statement backless satin halterneck top with smart jeans or trousers and slinky heels? Alternatively, jumpsuits are a great way to look more dressed up than you really are. These one-hit wonders are so easy to wear and don’t need much accessorising to look complete. Just slip into your favourite dancing shoes, grab your trusty clutch bag and you’re ready to go!
