Last Thursday, my phone was a hive of dress code angst. It was the week of a friend’s wedding, the evening portion of which was black tie (a little Mariah Carey to propose an outfit change, but we’ll let that slide), and I woke up to a string of WhatsApps.
‘What even is black tie?’
‘Reckon I can wear floral? All my dresses are summer daytime vibes.’
‘Guys have it so easy, they just have to resemble a poor man’s James Bond.’
It’s true that while men slip into their virtually identical shaken-not-stirred tuxedos, women have hemlines, print, colour and cut to think about. If you’re fretting about what to wear to a black tie wedding, here’s a simple guide to black tie wedding attire, plus our recommendations for the best black tie dresses.
What Is A Black Tie Wedding?
The black tie wedding dress code calls for elegant and formal attire. It’s a step below white tie in terms of formality but still requires an elegant outfit. The goal of the black tie dress code is to look polished while respecting the formality of the occasion. If you’re attending a black tie wedding, read on for some ideas for what to wear.

What Is A Black Tie Dress?
To break it down simply, a black tie dress is a ‘formal’ evening dress. Some traditional black tie guides will have you believe that long dresses are the only option, but over the years, black tie has broadened out and become more flexible, although no less glam.
Maxi or midi-length hemlines are your safest bet – if in doubt, err on the side of long – and on the fabric front, go for silky textures, velvet, sequins, chiffon or lace details. If nothing else, this is the perfect excuse to dress up.
Finally, just because there’s ‘black’ in the name, doesn’t mean you should be afraid of colour. Jewel tones, opulent prints and bright block colours are all great for black tie, so there’s no need to stick to neutrals, unless that’s your thing. Wear whatever you feel truly confident in.
The same goes for necklines. If the event is especially formal, then you may prefer more coverage, but generally anything goes – asymmetrical, plunge, long-sleeved, strappy, off-the-shoulder – basically, whatever helps you live out your red carpet fantasy.
Style with barely-there heels – we have a big range of wedding and occasion shoes to choose from – plus jewellery and a clutch, to complete the look. You can read more in our guide to what shoes to wear to a wedding.
The Best Black Tie Dresses
The Iconic Bardot Dress
This floor-length emerald green evening dress is a great choice for black tie events, whether you’re a guest or a bridesmaid. With pleated detailing on the bodice, and cut from a stretchy fabric, this dress really flatters your figure and hugs you in at the waist. Try styling with some gold heels, a matching clutch and some statement-making jewellery, for head-to-toe glam.
The Silkiest Satin Slip
Subtle details like a draped cowl neck and a slightly curved back hem give this emerald green cami slip dress an expensive-looking finish. Made from a lightweight silky satin fabric, it has adjustable spaghetti-style straps and a back leg split. Style it up with a pair of barely-there heels and a box clutch for your next black tie soiree.
The Off-The-Shoulder Showstopper
Choose an elegant, floor-length gown in a rich, jewel-toned colour like deep burgundy, emerald green, or navy blue. I love the off-the-shoulder maxi dress with a pleated waist, it’s the ideal combination of modern style and old school glamour. Plus, the scuba crepe fabric has a good amount of stretch, so it’s easy to dance in, and the fold-over neck adds a luxurious finish.
The Steal-The-Show Printed Midi
This is your reminder to not be afraid print. Made from a soft and stretchy fabric, this wrap-style dress hugs your shape and lets you move freely. With its beautiful navy and pink print, it’ll spark compliments, so prepare to cause a stir at the open bar. The wrap detail cinches in your waist and creates a subtle leg split – and if you prefer to have arm coverage, this is the one for you.
Other Black Tie Options
