The sunny season is *finally* here! And now the temperatures are warming up, it’s time to switch up your footwear and treat your feet to some summer sandals. From chunky platforms and wedges to elegant strappy heels, whether you’ve got plans for a sunshiney getaway or simply want to keep cool in the office, there’s a sandal for every occasion.
But styling sandals correctly is trickier than you may think. Luckily, the SilkFred team are specialists on the subject. Here, we’ve put together our go-to guide on what to wear with sandals – your feet will thank us later. Strap in…
Our top tips on how to choose sandals for women:
-
Fit check! Our number one rule for comfortable sandal-wearing is finding the right fit for your feet. To check that your sandals are fitting you correctly, pay attention to the way they contour your feet; they shouldn’t be too tight or too loose, otherwise you may get nasty blisters. Ouch. Worried about having slightly wider or narrower feet? There are plenty of wide-fit and narrow options out there to ensure that everyone can walk comfortably.
-
A helping hand: If you’re concerned that you’re sandals still don’t fit perfectly, we have a few tricks up our sleeves. Invest in a good quality insole or ball-of-foot cushion to provide an extra layer of comfort. These also help keep your feet from slipping and sliding around whilst walking. It’s also a good idea to carry some blister plasters with you if you’re particularly nervous about your first sandal outing.
-
Dress up your feet: Has it been a while since you last dared to bare? Why not give your feet the glow-up they deserve this summer and treat yourself to a pedicure? We love bright shades like pink, coral, and orange on the toes. You can also accessorise with cute anklets and toe rings – who said your feet had to look boring?
Styling sandals for the beach
Planning a beach holiday or a trip to the seaside this summer? You’re going to need a good pair of sandals. But what kind? Well, nobody wants to waste time unfastening buckles when they’re dipping in and out of the water. Instead, we’d recommend opting for some flip-flops or sliders that are easy to slip on and off all day long. Easy breezy.
Styling-wise, we love a classy monochrome bikini or swimsuit, layered with an effortlessly cool sarong, for poolside lounging. Pair with some sunnies and a hat, and accessorise with some waterproof jewellery if you’re feeling extra. Just don’t forget the SPF!

Styling sandals for a wedding
Summer is here, and so is wedding season. If you’re not one for a court shoe, then a strappy-heeled sandal is just the ticket. Comfy, yet oh-so-stylish, and because you’re all strapped in, you can strut safely down that aisle (and onto the dance floor) without worrying about losing your footing. What’s more, from stilettos to block heels, suede to croc print, there are plenty of different styles to choose from, to suit every taste.
We love a wrap dress for a wedding, and they’ll compliment your strappy heels perfectly. Universally flattering, the wrap dress is always a winner thanks to its waist-cinching effect and gorgeous v-shape neckline. Or, if you’re not much of a dress girl, why not opt for a chic jumpsuit? Once elevated with those strappy-heeled sandals, you’ll be walking into that wedding with your head held high. Just stunning!

Styling sandals for the races
If there’s one thing we know, it’s that nothing screams “a day at the races” than a pair of wedges. A timeless classic, opting for a pair of wedges will instantly add an element of chicness to your fit. Since they’re usually a neutral light brown colour, they go with most things, so you’ll get lots of wear out of them. We love a Pretty Woman-inspired spotty midi dress or a tailored suit trousers and waistcoat co-ord, to achieve the picture of sophistication. Match your wedges with a wicker bag and you’re onto a winner…

Styling sandals for the office
Just because it’s summertime and you can no longer wear your brogues to the office, doesn’t mean you can’t still werk. Now you might uncomfortable exposing your toes amongst colleagues (we totally get it), so instead, we recommend opting for some Scandi-style clog sliders. Practical, yet effortlessly cool.
The best way to dress for summer at work is by keeping things reserved and choosing breathable materials that are going to keep you cool, such as linen, cotton, and silk. We’d suggest styling your clogs with some breezy linen-blend trousers, or a floaty maxi skirt, depending on how flexible your dress code is.
Styling sandals for everyday casual
Looking for a go-to pair of sandals that you can wear every single day? Look no further than the flatform sandal. Thanks to its extra height, you’ll add a little edge to your day-to-day outfits, whilst keeping things totally casual too.
Wondering how to style chunky platform sandals? It’s easy! The beauty of these babies is that they go with just about anything, from your favourite pair of jeans to flowing maxi dresses, or a mini dress. So whether you’re heading to a picnic in the park, lunch with your best pals, or simply running some errands, your chunky sandals will be your BFF this summer.
And there we have it! Our ultimate guide to styling every type of sandal, for every occasion.
