Everyone has a power piece in their wardrobe. Maybe it’s a faux fur coat or a colour pop power suit. Perhaps it’s a designer handbag. Something that unleashes your confidence the moment you put it on. This season, our new favourite staple is a pair of over-the-knee boots.
Though some might find daunting, we’re here to tell you why over-the-knee boots (or ‘OTKs’) should be for everyone. Not only do they bring cold-weather glam to any outfit, but they keep your legs toasty as temperatures drop, and are a sure-fire way to help you strut your stuff with confidence.
The best news? There are so many ways to wear them: from pairing them with a mini dress and a long coat, to layering them over a go-to pair of classic denim jeans.
These statement boots might be a tad intimidating to first-time wearers, but fret not – the expert team here at SilkFred has pulled together the ultimate guide on how to rock a pair of knee-highs this autumn.
How To Style Over-The-Knee Boots
With Mini and Midi Dresses
With help from some clever layering and your trusty cold-weather OTK boots, you can 100% wear your fave mini and midi dresses into autumn too. Cardigans are a must in the autumn, and they look fab over the top of a dress with your knee-high boots. And don’t forget about underneath layers, too! We absolutely love layering a slim fitting white t-shirt under a strappy cami dress like this layered plated number for a cute, preppy look.
Afraid of the cold? Why not invest in a couple of long sleeve dresses for the chilly season? We’d recommend picking out some classic dark shades like black, navy or brown, so you can pull them out of your wardrobe year after year.
With Leather Look Trousers
An oversized jumper, faux leather trousers and black knee-high boots make up an iconic autumn trio that we never knew we needed! Step into your boots and sleek leather-look trousers, then brighten up your one-shade autumn outfit with a pop of red. We love this red cold shoulder oversized jumper for adding a little spice to your fit.
If you prefer prints, we recommend this oversized knit that’s patterned with stars. This really-comfy-but-also-totally-put-together look is an ideal option for brunches, weekend strolls and coffee runs.
With Midi Skirts And Jumpers
Vibrant midi skirts + neutral jumpers = the chic combo that’s becoming our everyday autumn uniform. To style, simply pop on a slim vest or t-shirt under your jumper, and pair with a stunning satin-feel midi skirt, like this chocolate number. If your jumper is super oversized, consider adding a belt and doing a french tuck to bring back a little more shaping to your silhouette. All that’s left to do is pop on your OTKs, grab your coat and head to that fancy lunch date. Or walk in the park – whatever your vibe is…
With Workwear
Who says OTKs weren’t office appropriate? To keep things strictly professional, style you black or brown leather over-the-knee boots with a neutral blazer dress or shirt dress, or an A-line skirt with a tucked-in pussybow blouse. Layer with an oversized blazer for a super smart and chic look.
With Jeans
One fail-safe way of styling your over-the-knee boots is with a pair of skinny or slim-fit jeans. Pair with an oversized jumper in a complementary colour, for a laid-back look, like the super soft Callie knit with flattering ribbed sleeves. You could also add some chunky earrings and a crossbody bag to keep things relaxed yet oh-so stylish. We’re obsessed.
With A Graphic Tee
Looking for an effortlessly cool fit? Enter the graphic tee. We love styling a pair of attention-grabbing knee-highs with a casual slogan tee, such as this cherry disco t-shirt. Pair with some black jeans (or even leather-look trousers if you really want to make a statement!), grab a little black shoulder bag, and you’re good to go. Just don’t forget to layer with a coat if you’re hitting the town.
With Partywear
If you’re glamming up for a night out with the girls, a pair of high-heeled over-the-knee boots is the perfect addition to your party wardrobe. Black on black is the perfect formula, but don’t be afraid to mix up your materials. Go for a luxurious material like velvet or suede and pair with a classic little black dress or a leather mini skirt and top. If you’re going all-out, a sequin look, like the bestselling Fifi dress, is your gal. Accessorise with statement jewellery and a black clutch to match your boots.

I am looking for an all rounder pair of over the knee boots but beine very tall I don’t want ‘high’ or ‘platform’. Very flat boots can also be more casual and not always smart enough for a dress but something in between? Do you have a medium height boot in your range please as they are not mentioned in your article?
Warm regards
